Woreda Ofla:

Ofla (Tigrinya: ኦፍላ) is one of the Districts of Ethiopia, or woredas, in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debubawi Zone, Ofla is bordered on the south by Alamata, on the west by the Amhara Region, on the north by Endamehoni, and on the east by Raya Azebo. Small towns in Ofla include Sesela and Zikuya. The town of Korem is surrounded by Ofla woreda (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Background

Due to the destructions caused by the two-year war and the existence of large number of internally displaced people, the people of Tigray have been experiencing severe food shortages for the last couple of years. This is now being compounded by severe droughts throughout Tigray and people are starting to die from hunger.

Raya Development Association in Canada (RDA Canada), through its intermediary, was able to identify three small villages in woreda Ofla in the southern region of Tigray.

Due to their remoteness and their proximity to the war front, these villages were generally inaccessible to NGOs and other agencies until very recently. As a result, RDA Canada found it necessary to provide urgent food aid for the worst affected villages in this woreda.

RDA Canada confirmed the situation with local administrators and was able to receive a list of one hundred family members who require urgent food aid.

Inline with its charitable purposes to Provide Relief of Poverty, RDA Canada approved $700,000 birr to help the family members listed.

RDA Canada transferred the funds to its representative; and he was able to purchase and distribute the aid in collaboration with local administrators of woreda Ofla.

As specified in the agreement (attached below), each person received:

·       70 kg of corn, estimated cost $4,000 Birr.

·       5 Litters of cooking oil, estimated cost $1,000 Birr

·       $2,000 Birr cash for supplemental food items.
